Maybe you’ve heard, countless times, about how much better The Sims 4 becomes when you install mods and custom content into it. Maybe you’re looking for a fresh way to play the game on your PC or Mac.
Whatever your reasoning for doing it, modding is a staple of computer gaming, and it heavily expands the game. Especially in the case of The Sims, where the community is incredibly active and has surpassed the original release. Here’s how to do this exactly.
Step Two: Find some custom content you want to download. The most popular website to find custom content for Sims games is The Sims Resource. You can find custom content on other sites like Tumblr by searching “sims 4 cc.' On The Sims Resource, you can find custom content for all of the Sims games! Sims 4 Custom Content in.package format must to be installed in Mods folder where the resource.cfg file is located Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods. If you wish to use subfolders to help sort it out, you will have to edit the resource.cfg file. I downloaded the sims 4 from origin, and I'm trying to install custom content, but there is no 'mods' file. Every 'how to' video i I've seen says I need to put my content into a mods file.
First and foremost, make sure your game has the ability to play the custom content. Start it up and on the main menu, click the three dots at the top right-hand side. Then, select Game Options, and then Other.
Once you’re here, make sure that Enable Custom Content Mods and Script Mods Allowed are both check marked. Then, go ahead and exit the game.
Next, you’re going to want to download whatever mods you want to play with. We have a master list of the best Sims 4 mods over here (it has over 150 of them on it), but we also publish a rundown of the best ones each month, every month. Here are the ones published so far.
2017 Good Sims 4 Mods
2019 Awesome Sims 4 Mods
And you can also get awesome Toddlers mods, Vampire ones, and Maxis Match Custom Content.
When you have the file on your computer, likely in your Downloads folder, you’re ready to install it. Keep that window of your download open, but also open up another.
Now, you can either use your computer’s search bar to look for “mods” and find the one that applies to The Sims 4, or you can find it manually yourself.
On PC, this folder is found in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. All you have to do at this point is drag and drop the files you downloaded into this Mods folder.
That’s it! Now, the next time you start the game up, you should see a message that lists for you all of the ones that are enabled and working with the game.
Every single time the game updates, though, it will disable the settings in the Game Options that you enabled, so make sure they turn back on in the settings like how I told you to do before, each time Maxis releases an update!
The Sims 4 is made a whole lot better thanks to all of the mods and Custom Content (CC) that its fans have created and shared with the community. This isn’t something you can just download from inside the game, though. Instead, you’ll need to find the content you want and load it into the correct file before you can play with them.
First thing’s first, you’ll need to make sure that the “Mods” folder is already set up. It should be, but you can check this by heading to the following file path:
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods
If you see this folder, click into it and make sure that the “Resource.cfg” folder is in there, too.
Now that you know everything is in place, it’s time to go and look for the CC that you want to use in The Sims 4. TheSimsResource has a ton of CC available for players to download and use in their games, including some of the most popular CC to have been created. If you still can’t find the CC you’re looking for, try checking out ModTheSims or heading to the likes of Tumblr and searching “Sims 4 CC.”
When you’ve found the Custom Content that you want, you’ll now need to download the file and make sure that the mesh also comes with it. This should be noted in the CC’s description, so make sure you’re always downloading Custom Content with this noted in the description, otherwise it may not work.
With these files downloaded, head to the location it was saved and cut the file with CTRL + X. Now you want to make your way back to the “Mods” folder at the file path we noted above. Drop the file into the Mods folder and make sure that the file ends in “.package.” If it doesn’t, you may need to extract it from a .zip or .rar folder.
Now all you need to do is boot up The Sims 4 on your PC or Mac. As long as you’ve got the correct files in the right folder, you should see a window titled “Mods” appear. This is basically confirming that your CC will work in the game, but now you’ll need to go ahead and enable it in the game’s settings.
In the top-right corner of the screen, you’ll see three dots. Click on these, selecting the “Game Options” mode and then “Other.” Now all you need to do is make sure that both “Enable Custom Content and Mods” and “Script Mods Allowed” are both ticked.
And that’s all there is to getting CC in The Sims 4. For more on the game and its many expansions, be sure to search for Twinfinite.
